Why Science is Super: The Origin Story Behind Smart Parts

As a dad, veteran, and lifelong learner, I’ve always believed that learning should spark curiosity, not confusion. When my twins, Lily and Gabe, started asking questions about how their bodies worked, I realized I didn’t want to give them a textbook. I wanted to provide them with a story.

The Problem: Too often, science feels like a subject you "have to" learn instead of something you get to explore. Especially for young kids, most resources are either too dry, too complex, or just plain boring. Where were the heroes, the laughter, the wonder?

The Spark: That’s when Smart Parts was born—an adventure book in which the heroes are kids just like mine, using creativity and courage to learn about their bodies and the world around them. Captain Atomic and Imaginer weren’t just storybook characters—they were inspired by my real-life twins.

What Makes Smart Parts Different:

• STEM-powered storytelling: Every page is packed with fun facts and science-backed explanations.

• For kids, by a dad who gets it: I wrote this with my kids in mind, and tested it around our kitchen table.

• Twins take center stage: Representation matters—and twins rarely get to be the stars of science stories.

The Mission: My hope is that Smart Parts makes science approachable, exciting, and empowering—especially for homeschool parents, teachers, and families who want more than just a worksheet.
